SUMMARY (Shelou Evidientes)

In the De La Garza family, Tita is the youngest child. She is responsible for caring for her mother until she dies of old age. Hence she is traditionally barred from getting married. When Tita is 15, she falls in love with Pedro, her lover, since they're still kids. Unfortunately, when Pedro asks her to marry him, Tita's controlling mother rejects him right away because she wanted her elder daughter to be Pedro's wife. Instead, Mama Elena's elder daughter Rosaura is encouraged to wed Pedro. Pedro claims that this is the only means through which he and Tita can get closer since his love for Tita is still strong and he is very persistent when it comes to Tita. It has a profound impact on Mama Elena's second daughter, Gertrudis, who is whipped into a lusty state and departs the ranch in the arms of a revolutionary soldier after Tita prepares a special supper using the petals of a rose that Pedro gave to her. Pedro continues to pursue Tita despite their unhappy marriage, even though they all share a home. When Pedro and Rosaura have their first child, Rosaura cannot breastfeed him, so Tita steps in to fill her place as a mother. This makes Tita and Pedro more attracted to one another, so Mama Elena transfers Pedro's family to Texas, where their first child dies. Their second child, Esperanza, shares Tita's passion for cooking. The loss of her nephew causes Tita to experience a mental breakdown. Mama Elena wants to bring Tita to a mental institution since she disapproves of how she acts, so she makes a call to Dr. John Brown for advice.

Dr. Brown, however, has compassion for Tita and rescues her from her mother's negative influence. Tita is asked to marry Dr. Brown, but when she and Pedro meet again, they make love she loses her virginity. She rejects Dr. Brown's offer to use this incident as justification because she didn't want to marry him. Rosaura and Mama Elena eventually passed away. Esperanza's liberation from the family custom allows her to wed Alex Brown. Pedro and Tita are at last reunited but all that is left is Tita's recipe book when their bodies burst with immense passion and desire the night, they make love, igniting the entire ranch and resulting in their deaths.

LITERARY CRITIC (Thea Magbanua and Quincy Fajutrao)

Literary Analysis using Magical Realism

The book's story centers on a young lady named Tita who longs for her boyfriend, Pedro. However, she cannot have him due to her mother's adherence to the family custom that forbids the youngest daughter from getting married and requires her to care for her mother until she passes away. When Tita cooks, that is the only way she can communicate.

  1. "The water had been dried up by the sun. Nacha swept up the tears' residue on the red stone floor. There was enough salt to fill a 10-pound sack - it was used for cooking and lasted for a long time." The characters accept the magical element's rationality rather than being questioned.

  1. "When she finished beating the meringue, it occurred to Nacha to lick some of the icings off her finger to see if Tita's tear affected the flavor. The flavor did not seem to have affected, yet not knowing why Nach was suddenly overcome with intense longing."  Human sexuality as a sexual construct and emotions are frequently developed in considerable detail.

  1. "Her body was giving so much heat that the wooden walls began to split and burst into flames." A form of irreducible magic that conventional understandings of natural law are unable to account for.

LITERARY ART (Angel Jayoma)

“Destined to meet, but not destined to be together. Sometimes, people are meant to stay in your heart but not in your life.”

This painting portrays and illustrates how people are destined to be in life and to be together in terms of love and challenges, yet it also shows how twisted life is because sometimes there will be people that are only meant to stay in your heart but not in your life. We see in the movie that Tita loves Pedro so much that she is willing to be a mistress to Pedro, and Pedro loves Tita so much because he agrees to marry her sister to be close to Tita. In the painting, we can see that there is a big cake at the back and it is the Chabela. Chabela is a cake of Mexicans that is prepared only on special occasions like weddings, birthdays, festivals, etc.

The three people in the painting are Rosaura, who is wearing a wedding gown, and she is the one that Pedro married just to be close to Tita. Pedro is in the middle, and he made the wrong decision to marry Tita's older sister Rosaura just so that he could get closer to Tita, and he succeeded. In the end, they stayed together. The woman in Pink is Tita, who discovers that what emotions she makes while cooking will be passed on to everyone who eats, and Tita is also the woman who was with Pedro until death. Pedro and Tita passed many challenges in life, but in the end, they realized that they still loved each other so much, so they fought for it, and when they became happy, they died together because of their happiness. This story shows that do not believe what others say and follow your heart and mind so that you can find true happiness in life
