Euro American Literature - Love Letter from the Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire

 DISCUSSION DIRECTOR (Norjanah Dumiar)

SUMMARY (Sofia Alimudin and Angel Jayoma)

In the poem "Love Letter from Toothbrush to Bicycle Tire" by Sarah Kay, the speaker describes her feelings for a boy whose relationship with her is frowned upon by others. Even when several warning signs or a friend has raised concerns, she continues to live in her puppy love bubble. This poem takes the proverb love is blind as its starting point and examines it from the point of view of the one who is blind. The poem focuses on the flawless female who offers her assistance to the flawed boy. The youngster is like the bicycle tire, he is perpetually soiled and filthy, and he is perpetually hurting the person he loves, regardless of whether or not he intends to do so.

How Kay describes her emotions and experiences through her poetry is distinctive because she employs general instances. As an illustration of the dynamic between a man and a woman, she may, for instance, employ a toothbrush and a bicycle tire in her work. So maybe one day you will grow tired of the road and roll on back to me. The toothbrush is supposed to represent the faithfulness of a woman committed to a man who is constantly on the move.

Theme:

  • The poem says, “They told me I was meant for the cleaner life” this could mean the two people are opposites and others do not want them together. Also, “They said that you would drag me through the mud, that you would tread all over me,” which is another way of saying that other people are warning the “Toothbrush” that the “Bicycle Tire” will only bring difficulties and negative energy.

LITERARY CRITIC (Daniel Kian Dela Cruz and Quincy Fajutrao)

Literary Approach: Formalism

In her poem "Love Letter from Toothbrush to Bicycle Tire," Sarah Kay describes her love for a boy that no one likes. Despite several warning signs or worries from others, she continues to be in her sphere of infatuation. The concept of the adage "love is blind" is examined in this poetry from the viewpoint of the "blind" one. In the poem, Sarah says that her friends told her, "that you would tread all over me so that they could see right through you that you were full of hot air that I would always be chasing." According to her pals, this boy would walk all over her, shatter her heart, and ultimately bring her to her knees. This boy is a liar who makes phony promises. By swooning on her and giving her what she wants to hear, he creates the illusion of a fairytale, and she falls for the tale and the lies.

"Toothbrush for bicycle tires" is about love. The toothbrush symbolizes a loyal woman devoted to a man who is always in motion. It is about the perfect girl trying to help a boy who is having a hard time. The boy is always muddy and dirty with his bicycle tires and always hurts his loved ones, intentionally or unintentionally. A lucky girl is either a toothbrush or a girl. She is someone trying to fix the boy. "They told me I was destined to live a cleaner life." Both lines show how the speaker wants to portray girls and boys. She wants to save the boy but cannot. The girl always waits for the boy to come back.

Many girls want to be good girls to fix broken boys. This is also reflected in the "Toothbrush for Bicycle Tires." This also reflects the mother-daughter relationship. This is primarily because the mother anticipates this type of relationship and knows how to handle it. This is an excellent mother-daughter relationship, but just because a mother-daughter relationship is good does not mean that the daughter understands what a good relationship should be.

The daughter will be looking for the boy who causes problems, the boy who has had a hard life, and she will try to fix him. This is precisely what "The Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire" is about.

LITERARY ART

They say that when it comes to love, no one chooses as long as you love the person, yes, this is true even if you are different when it comes to hitting you. Although there are differences love really is super powerful. This picture is the one that proves about love because the bicycle tire here is so dirty that he worked so hard then the toothbrush here felt sorry for the bicycle tire.
